Main Street Gallery in Cambridge is excited to be exhibiting the works of local artist, Jose Ramirez this summer. For the months of July and August his oil and watercolor paintings of local eastern shore scenes will hang along with the works of the seven gallery members in his show titled MORE THAN LINES AND COLORS.
A plein air and studio painter, Jose says he has always been an artist and that he paints what he loves, what he knows and where he lives. “As an artist, I have found the creative inspiration I desire and the ability to communicate my excitement and love for nature, people and everything that surrounds me” he says. As a resident of Dorchester County, his subjects are often the water, foliage and maritime scenes he encounters every day. But what inspires him about these scenes he says is their very presence and beauty and how light plays on them. “I like to seek out the relationship between light, shadow and atmosphere as I paint” he explains.
After moving to the Eastern Shore from his home in Guatemala in 2012, Jose says he started developing his unique style that he describes as “smooth and realistic”. His goal however is not to create an image that is photo-realistic or simply about lines and colors, but one that captures the feelings evoked by his subject, he says.
Jose Ramirez studied art at the Manuel Herrarte Lemus Art School in Chiquimula, Guatemala and began exhibiting his work at the age of 21.
He has shown his work widely in the area and is a member of the Academy Art Museum, the Plein Air Painters of the Chesapeake Bay and the Working Artists Forum, all in Easton.
MORE THAN LINES AND COLOR will premier at the gallery at 518 Poplar St. in Cambridge on July 5 and will run through August 31.
There will be two artist receptions on Second Saturdays, July 12 and August 9 from 5-8 pm. The artist will give a brief talk at 6 pm at the July reception. The receptions are free and all are invited. Light refreshments will be served.
