The Cultural Imperative Program

Shaping the Minds That Will Reshape America and the World
The Cultural Imperative Program is designed to increase cultural awareness and enhance critical thinking skills among high school students of color. Critical thinking skills are essential to academic success and also influence how students navigate their day-to-day activities. A foundation of cultural awareness for people of African ancestry is built upon learning historically accurate interpretations of African history and culture, which will positively impact the student's self-image and behavior, and strengthen their connection to African and African American people, places and things. With increased cultural awareness and enhanced critical thinking skills, CIP students begin to recognize their capacity for growth and ability to transform themselves, their families and communities.

CIP students are expected to attend a total of five 4-hour sessions. Sessions will occur one Saturday a month between January and May 2021. During each CIP session, students will read and analyze select text in "From the Browder File: 22 Essays on the African American Experience" by Anthony Browder, engage in thoughtful reflection and meaningful discussion, and complete a variety of assignments, such as written reflections, creative writing, cultural seminars, and more.
