Talk: Mindfulness & Creativity

Talk: Mindfulness & Creativity
The Dorchester Center for the Arts hosts a gallery talk on March 21 at 7pm with David Mercier, acupuncturist and author of A Beautiful Medicine. Mercier will speak about mindfulness and creativity. The program will also include an audience Q&A.
There is no admission fee, but donations to benefit the Dorchester Center for the Arts are welcome.

The talk is in conjunction with the exhibit, “100 Choptanks,” an exhibit of photographs by Cambridge-based artist curator, and writer. To wrap the exhibit, March 30 will feature Cambridge-based composer Anne Watts performing original music inspired by the 100 Choptanks photographs.

This unique exhibit is the result of what began as a dog walk for newly adopted shelter dog Bo. The walks quickly turned into a mindfulness exercise, and ultimately, an art project. “One day”, says Lewis, “I stood on the bulkhead near Long Wharf and looked out over the Choptank. It was a typical late summer sunrise, with a pastel glow in the distance, a cloudless sky above, and a slight ripple on the water’s surface. I pulled out my iPhone and snapped a photo. The composition was simple: half river and half sky, bisected by the horizon line. I was intrigued. With Bo at my side, I returned to the bulkhead and, day after day, basically took the same picture – 400 times.” Except what Lewis learned was that it was never the same, and this awareness resulted in an incredibly diverse series of photographs documenting the powerful show of nature in sky and water, divided by the horizon. The exhibit will feature several different iterations of these images from large wall hangings to posters to small framed works.
